Where to buy a blank cake and easy ways to decorate it.

In previous posts I have talked about using a dummy cake for your wedding reception then serving cutting bars for your guests. But there are plenty of shops and companies that offer blank cakes in variety of sizes, shapes and flavours for you to assemble and decorate. So, here are some options for you to purchase your perfect wedding cake on a budget. Later on I will give yo some great examples (and shamelessly plugging my cake toppers) for your enjoyment.

The first thing to remember when choosing and pricing up your store bought cake is that, unlike the polystyrene version, if your cake is teared, you will need supports. These supports (usually pillars and dowels) help distribute the weight to the base, basically stopping the cake from turning into the leaning tower of wedding cake or worse, a cakey smush. This is especially important if you are having a fruit cake because they weigh a tone.

               M&S offer a good range of supports - https://www.marksandspencer.com/l/food-to-order/wedding-cakes/wedding-cakes/accessories-n-df6al?intid=FW_WDCakes_Tile5_Accessories

This legendary Yorkshire institution offers beautiful cake options, with this little beauty costing £260. List - https://www.bettys.co.uk/plain-soft-iced-cake

Windsor Cake Craft

This company offers many sizes and flavours but please be advised the icing and filling is not included. So it is a little bit more work but you have the advantage of having the filling of your choice and you can have a little more fun with the icing. For example, instead of plain white icing, why not add a colour or create a marbled effect with gel colouring roughly kneaded into the fondant before before rolled out and put on the cake. 3 tiered cake costs from £33.70. I had planned on taste testing all of these cakes however I have to admit when I looked into it, it would cost my little business too many pennies. Ofcourse if I had a sponsor HINT HINT, I could afford to try them, so I hope to revisit these in the future to tell you who wins the taste test.

Now here are some great and easy ideas for decorating your beautiful cake with some little treasures from me. Enjoy.

Ribbons
Simple Satin ribbon is always elegant and budget friendly, top with a simple flower matching your bouquet for a classic cake that will dazzle your guests. You can either fix your ribbon with a couple of dabs of royal icing or for a bit of interest, use pearl topped pins to fasten the ribbon together and to the cake.

Think Green
Why not try using a little bit of greenery on alternate sides of the cake going upwards, it's so simple but really effective and so so easy.

 Pretty Pearls
Now this is a super easy option, albeit fiddly and time consuming but definitely worth it. I bought 2 bags of assorted pearls from the Range cost a grand total of £2 and using a dab of store bought royal icing stuck them around the bottom of each tier in a random pattern. The took some satin ribbon and, using the royal icing again stuck it on the top. So this cost me under £3 but look and million dollars.

10 Alternatives to a traditional wedding cake

Ok, so let's face it, not everyone likes cake and nobody likes the huge price tag attached to wedding cakes. But panic not! There are so many alternatives to a traditional fruit sponge that will knock your guests' socks off and in most instances, save you some pennies to put into your honeymoon G&T piggy bank. With lots of newer ideas I have intermingled some oldies but goodies. And yes we've seen them before but WHOOOAAHH MAMMA they are still good. Pour example......... 1. Cheese Towers - If you, like me, enjoy cheesy good times and teetering on the edge of a heart attack, then this is the one for you. Serve it with crackers, biscuits and slices of fruit. It will be a winner with any wedding party. And if you are in the North Wales /The North West of England, why not check out my buddies at The Little Cheesemonger in Rhuddlan, North Wales. The people there are beautiful but more importantly, the shop sells cheese, bread and Gin - enough said. Cheese towers star...

Top 5 Reusable and Recycled Christmas Wrap Ideas.

Christmas is just around the corner, as I am constantly reminded on TV, in the shops and by my 7 year old. I have been so busy lately that I hadn't even thought about Christmas until two family members called up to ask what my daughter wanted.                                    Christmas! but that is ages away! I thought, but as of today, it is 42 days until the big day! Only 6 weeks to frantically order this years must have toy and then panic that it won't arrive in time. Only 6 weeks to argue about who's parents to spend the big day with. Just 6 weeks to write all your christmas cards, forget to send them until the 22nd where they will be put up for one day and then chucked in the bin. Oh Christmas, how we all love it and it is truly one of the most magical times of the year but it is also the most wasteful time of the year. In 2017, an article in  The Independent ...

Wreath tutorial 2 - Re-using a display and The rule of 3

Recently I was fortunate enough to arrange flowers for my Sister in laws Wedding and she was kind enough to let me bring some home. The display came from the ceremony table, made up from artificial flowers, berries, greenery, pine cones and pheasant feathers. The display was a little too large and formal for me to just have around the house so I decided to take it to pieces and re use the flowers.              We have just moved so, there are boxes of Christmas decorations hanging around and by chance, this wreath was sitting on top of one open box. I bought it last year for no more than a couple of pounds but hadn't found anything to do with it. Until now that is....... For this display I used: 3 Burgundy Roses 3 Hydrangea flowers ( I took a full hydrangea head and dismantled it) 3 Pine Cones 3 Pheasant feathers 3 Eucalyptus sprigs a metre or 2 of ivy An artificial wreath Florist...
